Breakthrough Win for Haas at the Hope; Three Consecutive Wins for FJ

Bill Haas (FJ ICON style #52054) made a short birdie putt on the 18th hole to earn his first PGA Tour victory at the Bob Hope Classic on Monday, edging fellow FJ players Matt Kuchar (MyJoys) and Bubba Watson (FJ golf shoes, SciFlex glove) by one stroke with a bogey-free 8-under 64. Haas becomes the third consecutive FJ player to win this season, joining Geoff Ogilvy (SBS Championship) and Ryan Palmer (Sony Open).

Haas was the last of the co-leaders to play the 18th, and an outstanding 3-iron approach from 206 yards allowed him to two-putt his way to a 30-under 330 finish. He also birdied the par three 17th hole.

“I’d been wanting to win from the first tournament I played, but it’s a process, and there’s a lot to it,” said Haas. “It’s special, but I don’t know if it’s a monkey off my back. I know how hard it was to win, and I’m grateful.”

After grinding through five rounds on four courses in the rain-delayed tournament, Haas couldn't celebrate until he made it through the last hole with his hands shaking and fingers going numb -- and at that point, he didn't even know his father Jay, the 1988 Hope Classic champion, had made it back from the Champions Tour event in Hawaii to watch him.

“It’s definitely neat that down the road, 22 years from now, we can look at both our names on the list here,” Bill Haas said. “I’m not trying to compare myself to him. He’s almost unreachable.”

  • Always been a fan of the Haas family. Glad the kid got his first victory.

  • Great win for a great young player. It looked like anyone's tournament among the last couple of groups, only Haas managed to get the job done. Great finish!

  • An exciting end to the tourney. Very cool story for Bill and his father.

    Congrats to Mr. Haas!

  • Congrats to Bill on his first win and for keeping the FJ streak alive!

  • FJ wins AGAIN!!! This could be a trend... Congrats Billy!!!

  • Congratulations to Bill and the Haas family.  Lets hope FJ sweeps all the events!

  • 2010 for FootJoy... 3 for 3. Let the streak build!

  • Congrats to Bill on his 1st win.  3 weeks, 3 chances to win.  I hopefully with these odds, I might have a shot.

  • Another win for FJ. Nice to see Bill Haas win a tournament and it must be nicer for him to win a tournament his father won 22 years earlier.

  • One of the upcoming young guns and one who iss keeping th FJ story alive. Congratulations to Bill and may he win more. the Haas family can take real pride in this young man who has won his first, of which I hope, will be many wins.

  • I can't believe a 3 for 3 start for FJ this season. Nice to see another Haas making their name. Especially after fighting the bad weather in paradise to win.

  • Outstanding finish! Focus and concentration and the ability to finish are not qualities that everyone can attain. Well done. He's just started and will be a factor for a long time to come.

  • Congrats!! Nice to see a young player win!! FJ is showing that it is the product of golf!!

  • Way to go Bill!  I truly enjoy seeing the younger players on tour succeed with PGA Tour wins. I was pulling for either Bill Haas or Matt Kuchar.  I was fortunate to meet Matt at an outing in Atlanta right after his win late 2009. It was a pleasure meeting and talking with Matt.  I'd hope that Bill would be as pleasant as Matt in settings as those.

I look forward to watching Little Haas continue to compete at the highest level this year like he did at the Bob Hope.

  • Great job Bill! You're one of my favorite "youngsters" on the PGA tour.
