Webb Simpson secured his first win for 16 months at The Shriners Hopsitals for Children Open in Las Vegas.
The American whose last win came at the U.S. Open in 2012, hadn’t converted a victory from the last two times he held the 54-hole lead, but at TPC Summerlin he made sure it wasn’t three.
Simpson wearing FJ ICON™ shoes and a Pure Touch® glove shot a final-round 66 to win by six shots after starting Sunday with a four-shot lead. His 24-under 260 (64-63-67-66) tied the tournament record and earned him 500 FedExCup points in his first start of the 2013-14 season.
The North Carolina native called it “my best ball striking tournament yet.” And his caddie Paul Tesori backed up his sentiment. “I’m so proud of him because he didn’t do it with the putter today; he did it with his ball striking. He hit it straight, he had great distance control.”
Simpson hit 62 of 72 greens, second-best in the field, and was 13th in driving accuracy, hitting 36 of 56 fairways. He missed just three fairways and three greens in the final round on his way to securing victory.
It was just what the 28 year old had been waiting for after a winless 2013 campaign “It was a little frustrating,” said Simpson, who still qualified for his third consecutive TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola in 2013 and played in The Presidents Cup. “My main goal every year is to get better. I thought I was getting better; I just wasn’t in contention enough. I never really doubted anything. I just thought it was a matter of time before it happened.”
Simpson is now second in the FedExCup points standings, behind fellow FJ player Jimmy Walker after three events.
