Four time PGA Tour winner Nick Watney had a relatively quiet 2012 season until his breakout victory in the the first leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs at Bethpage Black. The California native began the day two strokes off the 54-hole lead, but quickly picked up a stroke on the first hole and another with a birdie on the second to tie the lead. Watney, in FJ Sport, added two more birdies on the front nine for a two under 34 and the top spot on the leaderboard at the turn.
Shooting even par, 35, on the back was all Watney needed to wrap up the three stroke victory. Watney hit 17 or 18 greens during his final round.
Watney stated post round, “It’s been a long season. It was a really long round. It wasn’t always pretty, but to win on this course is amazing...I’m just super-excited.”
The win moves Watney to the top spot on the FedEx Cup Rankings and makes him a potential captain's pick for the upcoming Ryder Cup.
