With the launch of FJ ICON MyJoys just around the corner we paid a visit to the FJ Tour Team at the Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland. A pro-am format, with the Tour pros playing with their amateur partner for 3 consecutive days on 3 world class courses – Carnoustie, Kingsbarns and The Old Course at St Andrews, before a cut is made and a final round on the Old Course is run. Despite the Indian summer that most of the British Isles are seeing, St Andrews seems to have missed it all. The course looks in superb condition, if a little on the green side for a ‘true’ links, but a great test all the same.
Staying in a flat above the world-famous Auchterlonie’s Golf Shop we got to the course just after 8am on Tuesday to see a couple of groups already out on the course. Soon after opening up the truck FJ ambassador Brett Rumford comes in to get out of the rain briefly before his practice round. He should be ok though, he’s got his FJ Sport Rainwear from head to toe and is sporting the new FJ ICON shoes.
There’s a pile of shoes ready for collection, for the likes of Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy (pictured right), Luke Donald and many more, many of them customised through the MyJoys programme.
The players soon start appearing on the range. We roll out to see a DryJoys wearing Martin Erlandsson (pictured right) head to toe in FJ Sport Rainwear fizzing some mid-irons into the breeze.
Its great to see a few bays down from him Robert Karlsson (below right) who is back in competition after a long lay-off due to an eye injury. The break hasn’t hurt him in the slightest, he’s striping a new driver to the far reaches of the range.
Australian Peter O’Malley comes in for a chat and is very interested in the new FJ ICON shoes, especially when we show him how he can get them to include his favourite colour – royal blue. Here’s his chosen design, going for the Sport saddle with Boa lacing system, you can also see him choosing a pair from the stock line.
Coach Mark Roe comes in at the same time and quickly designs a couple of pairs of shield tip FJ ICON MyJoys, one with blue lizard, one in green lizard which he kindly refers to as ‘cabbage’ green.
Star of the recent Vivendi Trophy Rory McIlroy pictured below left) comes in with his dad who is his amateur partner for the week. Rory is soon on the computer putting together a snazzy pair of white and orange lizard FJ ICON MyJoys, and then puts in some further orders with Tour rep Guy Smith.
Rory and his dad are used to the tough conditions so avoid too much practice and are happy to hang around in the truck and chat the club technicians in the back.
Back out on the range there is plenty of RainGrip glove use. In fact there are so many requests that the truck runs out! Peter Lawrie is putting one through its paces with a pair of DryJoys on his feet, and soon beside him on the range is Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell, in a sweet pair of all black FJ ICONS.
Soren Kjeldsen (pictured below right) is a late visitor to the truck to pick up a couple of pairs of FJ ICONS. A conservative dresser, Soren doesn’t like to be too outlandish with his shoes, but seems happy with his design of a white/red Sport saddle FJ ICONS
And last, but by no means least, is Englishman Steve Webster (pictured below centre), who is the proud collector of 5 pairs of FJ ICONs! By his own admission he got carried away recently in the US when playing in a recent tournament, but has created some crackers, 2 on the asymmetric pattern: a white/blue and black/camo, and 3 stunning shield tips, a white blue, a white red, and a white purple. I think he’s quite happy with his choices….
Oh, and its still raining outside….
