It was always just a matter of time before Northern Irish sensation Rory McIlroy claimed his first victory, and after a dramatic final round at the Dubai Desert Classic, Rory now has his name on his first professional trophy.
The 19 year old carded a final round of 70, which included just 5 pars, but crucially saw him take the coveted title by a single shot. After starting with 3 birdies, McIlroy stumbled a little before reeling off an impressive 5 bridies on the trot around the turn. And in spite of a determined chasing pack, Rory executed an impressive up-and-down from the greenside bunker on the 72nd hole to take the title.
McIlroy admitted that the pressure had made it difficult, saying: “You see guys coming down the stretch with a four or five shot lead, and you think it’s easy – but it’s not. You still have to play the shots, and you still have to hole the putts."
The win elevates Rory to 16th in the World Rankings and to an impressive 2nd in the Race to Dubai standings. His maiden victory was all the more impressive given the quality of the chasing pack, including fellow FJ wearers Henrik Stenson, Martin Kaymer and European #1 Robert Karlsson.
Rory's shoe of choice was a pair of all white FJ Classics style #50607. In fact FJ was the shoe of choice for the majority of players at the Dubai Desert classic, with 70% of the top 10 opting to put their trust, and their feet, in FootJoy.
