What got you to start playing and when did you know you were hooked?
I've been wanting to play for about 15 years now. Never got to play because no one was willing to go with me. About a year ago and oppurtunity came up for me to go play with friends and I jumped all over it. Borrowed a set from a friend and bought everything else and played what was described as the worse round that anyone had every seen.
I think that all the ribbing is what got me hooked. I had to improve so that I can go out again and just quiet the peanut gallery. I think I got into it when, as stated in another thread, I came within 2 yards of a hole in one. What sealed the deal for me was the 2nd hole at a course I go to that has a water hazard. I hit the ball off the tee and as I was waiting to donate another ball to the course I saw it land on terra firma on the other side. What a feeling.
The line I was in at the time gave us a lot of down time and the only channel we could get clear on the tv was the golf channel so we started watching it a lot. After a while it started to get interested and I decided to give it a try and I was hooked the first day I went out to the range. Love the game !!!
I was hooked my first time on a course. My dad never played so a family friend took me out. He set me up with an extra set of his clubs. At 13, I had seen it on TV but it was nothing like I had imagined. I was in awe of the beauty of the course and spending hours walking and conversing with the person who would become my golf mentor. I couldn't sleep the night after I played and got my first set of clubs the next day.
I NEVER HAD THAT MOMENT. I STARTED PLAYING AT ABOUT AGE 9 AND KIND OF GREW UP WITH GOLF
I started playing at about 10 years old. I tagged along with my parents when they would go play. I was playing a lot of sports as a youngster so it probably wasn't until I was about 15 that I knew it was the game for me.
Thinking back on it, I cannot remember a time when I wasn't golfing. I guess I am lucky that my Dad had me tag along in the cart when he played. What I remember most a a small boy was that going golfing meant that I got to spend time with my Dad. It was through him and his love for the game that I believe I got my love of the game. Hopefully some day I will be able to pass on the love of the game to my children.
I started playing as a get away. It was to get away from all of the stress from work. It was a place where i could go and turn off my phone and cut off all communication from the world and just have peace. But now that i play all the time, i found that i picked the wrong game to play to get away from the frustration. HAHAH
Started really playing about 2 years ago when other sports were nolonger an option due to knee injuries. Before that it had been a once or twice a year thing. Really wanted to feel the competitive juices flow again, and golf has given me that option.
Love the game and really can't get enough of it now, and being out with my buddies for a few hours is a huge plus.
I was always at the golf course growing up, my father played college golf and has had a lifelong passion. But I started seriously playing at age 12 and have never looked back.
My son played for a year or so and had a beautiful swing. But he is interested in other things and maybe the game will come back into his life later on.
Why oh why?
Remember it well. My relatives were going to play 18 holes at the Chautauqua Institution course. July of 1994. Goaded me into playing, even though I hated golf. The Pro had to dust off the left handed clubs he had as rentals, and off we went. I shot something like a 130 out there, but I had so much fun!
So since my hockey playing days were over and there were no other sports I wanted to try, golf became my new obsession. My wife tells me it was the day I started my weekend odyssey! Haven't looked back since.
My dad thought it was important that we learn "lifetime" sports, so we took golf and tennis and swimming lessons. I had the basics, but didn't take the time to really learn or play until about 13 years ago when I got into the tournament management business. Now it's both my work and my play!
My uncle is a lefty and he had been playing for several years. My 2 cousins started a year or so before when I was in 11th grade. It was pretty much competition that started it but when I started I just enjoyed playing. My uncle gave me a what he had left over set and started from there my senior year in highschool. I made the golf team that year and been playing even since. When I look back at my scores I was playing on golf team... we weren't very good as I was #3 on team and could never break 52 on 9 holes. But I had a great time trying!
Don't know why but I'm glad it happened.
Guys at work would play 9 holes in the morning, before coming to work. I thought what a waste of time. When I retired I started playing, this dumb game, with these same guys. Well, I got hooked on this game. I now work part time at a golf course. The friends I made on the course and the beauty of the course are priceless. Needless to say I am addicted to this game.
i was raised in a house at the bottom of the street that had a 9 hole town golf course on the water. i would row my boat to the first fairway and climb up and have lunch watching the golfers. since i wasn't allowed to play any other sport other than tennis, my friend peter and i would play golf together.
i got hooked watching phil win his first masters.
