AT AGE 12, HE GAVE ME HIS BURKE WOODS AND IRONE. THEY WERE STTEL SHAFTED WITH A GREEN PLASTIC COATING ON THE SHAFTS
THEN WHEN I WAS 15 DAD GOT ME A NEW SET OF WILSON SAM SNEAD BLUE RIDGE WOODS AND IRONS.
THE FIRST SET I BOUGHT WAS IN 1972......WILSON STAFF WOODS AND IRONS.
SINCE THEN MANY MORE SETS . SEE MY PROFILE FOR WHAT I HAVE THIS YEAR!!
My first set of irons were 1972 Wilson Staff Blades with Ben Hogan persimmon woods.
The first set I bought were Ping Eye 2's 1-SW and Taylor Made Tour metal woods.
And I had a Wilson 8802 putter, wish I still had that one.
First set was Titleist 804. OS, steel shafted with Taylormade woods.

IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY I FOUND A PARTIAL SET OF TONY PENA CLUBS IN MY GRANDPAS GARAGE -6 IRONS AND 2 WOODS.
NEXT CAME A USED SET OF MCGREGOR TOMMY ARMOUR IRONS AND 2 RAWLINGS WOODS I THINK I GOT AT SEARS.(AROUND 1951-2).DURING HIGH SCHOOL I ADDED TWO TOP KICK CUSTOM WOODS AND PLAYED WITH THAT GROUP OF CLUBS FOR 10-12 YEARS.
NEXT CAME MY FIRST NEW SET OF CLUBS-WILSON STAFFS (REALLY SMALL CLUB HEADS ON ALL THE CLUBS-WITH XSTF SHAFTS.
SINCE THEN I HAVE HAD 3 SETS OF NEW CLUBS AND NOW HAVE COBRA TRANSITION S 2010 IRONS AND COBRA DRIVER AND FAIRWAY WOODS.
JUST WENT THROUGH 60 YEARS IN A HURRY.
My first round was with an old set of Patty Berg's that were in somebody's garage. It was pouring rain and by the 8th hole the leather grips started to unravel. LOVE THE DESCRIPTION OF THE KMART CLUBS. I ALWAYS THOUGHT MY HIGH SCHOOL GOLF COACH HAD CARCIA FISHING RODS WITH HEADS GLUED ON THE ENDS.
Wilson Staff blades and McGregor Eye O Matic Persimmon Woods. I also had one of the very first models of Ping putters, it made such a loud pinging sound that I had my dad fill in part of the openings on the bottom to try and dampen it somewhat.

All were given to me by my uncle when he saw I was interested in playing golf. I didn't start playing until my senior year in highschool. It didn't look pretty but it got the job done. I was #3 on on our golf team. Not bad for picking up the game 6 months before I tried out for the team or our team sucked that bad! LOL
Back 50 years ago - I got started with Wilson Patty Bergs and Sam Sneads.
Much better choices for younger kids starting today - clubs made for their size and age.
