Questions for the Community:
Do you stick with one brand with your clubs in general, or mix and match what works best for you?
Also, Do you stick with one brand of clothing to wear as well or mix clothing brands based on feel and performance?
I stick to Titleist/Vokey/Cameron for my clubs.
I do like a number of different clothing lines, but my most worn are FootJoy and Bobby Jones shirts and Brooks Brothers slacks.
I have Cleveland & Vokey Wedges, Taylormade Hybrids and the rest of my bag is Ping. I tried a number of different clubs before settling on that combination. I seem to be loyal to more than one.
TaylorMade driver. Callaway irons (for Now) Vokey 52, 56, & 60 deg. wedges. Callaway putter. Hope to have all Titleist some day
I've down to: TaylorMade Driver, Woods, Hybrids
Muzino Irons, Cleveland Wedges (although I've been looking really hard at the Adams CB1s)
Bettinardi Putters
Footjoy Shoes (duh!) -
What ever clothing makes me look good (although I try to support my local pro - meaning some Callaway, Fairway & Green, Cutter & Buck) - always something Orange and/or Maroon (VT is a Nike School - so a few Nike Shirts)
GO HOKIES
I'm Titleist, Vokey, Cameron only.
Clothes I am not as particular about.
My setup is pretty simple to keep up with. I also have been playing this particular Manufacturer for 25 years and have several sets of irons that are put up in my collection. I really liked the exotic metals they produced in the late 80's.
Anyway my loyalty to PING is pretty strong. My wife plays PING (G2L irons) my two children also have PING clubs. My daughter is 9 yrs old and plays PING Moxie and I bought my 2 yr old son a set of PING Pal (hoping he enjoys the game) recently, even though I am afraid to let him loose in the house with them yet.
Current Bag setup
Driver: PING Rapture V2 (Diamana whiteboard X stiff)
Fairway woods: PING Rapture (Aldila proto by you stiff)
Hybrids: PING G10 18 and 24 degree (UST stiff)
Irons: PING 57 Tour blades (ZZ65 Stiff)
Wedges: PING Tour W 50, 54, 60 and 64 degree (ZZ65 stiff and grinds adjusted to my specs by PING WRX)
Putters: PING Redwood Anser , i series Anser 4 (go figure on those two putters) and an i series Craz-e
Bags: PING Tour Staff and Lattitude walking bag
Clothing: PING Collection (shirts, pants and shorts)
Shoes: FJ Icons, Sports, Contours, Classics, Green Joys and 1 pair of sandals (We all know these are the best shoes on the planet)
Thanks
Tim
Ah yes, brand loyalty. It should actually say "brands loyalty", shouldn't it?
My loyalties have changed over the years a lot, and not on a whim. I have been very loyal to Callaway Golf, and there was a time I used all Callaway clubs except my wedges. But they have lost their way on Drivers, so I moved them aside.
So my bag consists of:
Driver: Taylor Made R9, Aldila stiff
3-5 metals: Taylor Made Burner, Fujikura stiff
Hybrids: 3-4 Taylor Made (though a new Ping G15 23* is on order)
Irons: PING i15, 2* upright on 6-W, 1.5* upright on 5
Wedges: Vokey 52* & 56*
Putter: Scotty Cameron Studio Design 5.0. Putter is fully customized at the Custom Shop by Scotty
Bag: Callaway Golf Staff
Shoes: seriously? What other could it be? 100% FootJoy!
Gloves: FootJoy
Balls: Titleist NXT Tour, only number 1's.
The wardrobe is a bit more eclectic. I have a lot of Brooks Brothers Country Club shirts and pants, but use them mostly as apres round wear. It seems my shirts are in 3 camps; Under Armour, Callaway, and FootJoy. In trousers and shorts it's Addidas and Ian Poulter Design. Have to say, the IJP design stuff is like finely tailored garments, but with the Poulter flair. I get SO many comments on the shorts (only tartans) during every round. Could be because they match the FJ shoes? Perhaps... Finally, I am looking very closely at Travis Matthew clothing. They seem to be on to something, and with Bubba coming on board as a major investor.... Well, we lefties need to stick together.
Pretty simple for me, Taylor Made covers all except the putter (Cameron) and wedges (Cleveland). Shoes and glove are FJ, along with all outerwear now that I won the contest (review will be coming soon!).
Clothing is a little different, I would say 75% of my shirts are Nike (love the fit), but have a lot of one-offs that I just pick up when I really like the look. Agree 100 with TH on the Travis Mathews product. Puma has taken over the shorts, really love the fit and style.
Shaun
Taylormade driver, hybrid and irons, Callaway 3 wood, Cleveland wedges and SC putter.
Shoes FJ, of course. No particular brand of clothing.
I'm loyal to Titleist with the clubs, except for one TM hybrid that I can't seem to kick out of the bag.
Clothing is another story. It's tough to be loyal to one brand. However, if FJ wants to sponsor an amatuer hack, I'll gladly be brand loyal :)
Thanks for all the feedback guys. The reason I asked is because I was harrassed by a player at a scramble on sunday (decked head to toe in ADIDAS and Bag full of nothing but Taylormade, but was not sponsored by them: I asked) for having Taylormade: driver, 3 wood, hybrid, and irons, but Titelist wedges and a Scotty putter. Also for wearing a Nike shirt (which was the shirt team I coach bought this year) but having FJ shoes and wearing greg norman shorts. He said "I needed to pick one brand of clubs and clothes in order to really become a better golfer."
I politely pointed out that I play what works for me and I wear what feels comfortable and performs. And I may have made a reference to the fact my team was -17 and his was -10 but that I would definatly take his advise into consideration :).
I am pretty set on only wearing FJ shoes...but that goes without saying. But as long as a club works for me it is going in the bag, and if the clothes fit and match then I am good to go!
Its interesting to see how few are completely loyal to any particular brand. With so many great companies producing hard and soft goods its easy to see why.
I have used nearly every single brands clubs, but have found Titleist to be the best woods, wedges and putters and have stuck with those throughout the years. I had always used Mizuno irons but I just switched at the beginning of the season to Callaway Tour Authentic X Prototype irons and they are unbelievable. The Titleist AP2s are incredibly hot too.
Whatever works best for you, put it in the bag. We're all trying to get around 18 holes as quick as possible. I would use a soldered plumbers pipe if I thought it would help get the ball in the hole faster.
As for apparel obviously we all prefer FootJoy shoes and gloves and the outerwear is the best in the business. When it comes to softgoods there are double the companies involved and so many options. I use whatever looks best works the best.
I have mostly Titleist in the bag at the moment but I will go with whatever works, not too much loyalty from me on clubs. Balls are a different story, Titleist only. Either ProV1X or NXT Tour depending on how strapped for cash I am. Shoes, FJ of course. For clothes I go with whatever is comfortable and looks good but now that I think about it I do have a lot of Nike. Especially shirts. They make some really nice performance/moisture wicking stuff, in my opinion. And playing golf in Alabama in the summer requires the moisture wicking fabrics.
I've never been the type of person to care about brands or labels. That goes for everything in life... clothes, cars, and especially golf. What you buy should be based on quality and what works for you.
That being said, FootJoy shoes are obviously a must. But that's because of the quality, not the logo.
