Does anyone know how to safely remove stuck spikes in the Fitdogs?   In trying to remove them, the spike portion of the cleat has separated from the base and has left me with just a plastic nub with nothing for the wrench to bite into.  The shoes have been great without excessive wear or leaks since I bought them new in 2001.

Anyone have any ideas?

Also, what kind of threads do I need to replace them?

Thanks,

Thanks to all who responded.  With a little elbow grease, a drill and more than a few skinned knuckles, I got them out and replaced them.

Much Appreciated

This has happend to us... we even tried to send them back to FJ to get it fixed... but the warrenty was out. This is what you do. Take a small drill bit and drill into the nub. ( Don't do down to far)Then glue a screw into the hole with superglue and wait for it to dry. You can use the screw as a handle to get the nub out.

Now we did this with the metal thread spikes but I bet that it would work for plastic too. Maybe you can just put the drill in reverse and pull the nub out...

Have had this happen to me. I used a small drill bit and placed a small hole in the center of the cleat stub and then ran a larger screw into the drilled hole. Carefully lift up on the screw with a vise grip and with a needle nose pliers you  should be able to get hold of the top of the nub and turn it out. It may take a couple of tries, but it did work for me when I changed out some spikes for a friend of mine. If you have a needle nosed vise grips it will work even easier.

I goofed and hit send   without completing my reply. You may also try usinga larger drill bill and instead of drilling into the nub, use it in reverse by pressing down hard on the nub with the drill bit and going in reverse it could come out. I would suggest  that if you use this method, soak the nub and hole with a solvent like WD40. that should loosen any accumulated dirt or rust.

You can try what mizunogirl has suggested and along those lines can also go by your local Home Depot or hardware store and get a screw extractor set, it will do exactly what was described previously, it just takes a lot less time.
