I started out with my fathers old set (circa-Kennedy administration) MacGregor tourney forged irons,Wilson Sam Snead  strata-bloc woods both with leather grips. They came in a red and black leather golf bag and a Wilson "smoothy" putter.

My first set of clubs was a used set of Wilson Par and my Dad's old Persimmon Woods. Being a somewhat naive teenager, I figured that the woods hadn't been touched for years so they were pretty nice. Unfortunately, they only lasted a week of practice and 2 holes of my first round of golf ever. It seems that storing persimmon woods in a dry attic in 100 degree heat for 15 years seems to dry them out. The driver blew apart at hole 2, by the 17th the 3 wood was also toast. I replaced them with the first metal woods of the day, Pinseeker. I wish I would have known then what I know now, I would have kept those clubs as a momento, kept them in the basement, and I would still have them now.

First set was grampa's old wooden shafts. (wish I still had them), Then Cary Middlecoff signature clubs, then Wilsons and now Callaway irons, Titleist  Vokey wedges, Callaway putter, TaylorMade Driver, Adams 3 wood, SnakeEyes 5 wood, and still may change clubs somewhere down the line. Still use steel shafts and stiff flex graphite on woods.

i started out with a few spalding irons maybe 3, 5, 7, 9 and a spalding sand wedge that my mom bought for me at herman's sporting goods. i also got a couple of wooden woods like a 1 and a 3 which were also probably spalding. these clubs were all kids size. i got a glove and a bunch of yellow balls and some tees and a nice tan canvas bag to go with it. i liked that set a lot. we lent it to the son of a family friend when i outgrew it and i wish i still had it today. i've never seen it again.

First set I owned (bought from money saved from caddying) a 3 year old 1960 set of Walter Hagen 'Haig Ultras"  purchased for $40 ( about 8 rounds of carrying doubles)

To rephrase the question, my current set of clubs I am starting out with is a set of Mizuno MX100's.

Second year golfer here & loving every minute of it

I will be the first to say... my first driver had quite the sky marks... I would be disgusted if my driver looked like that one did.  I am mad if I chip any portion of the painted crown period, let alone if I ever get a sky mark... I may have a heart attack.
