Annual Myrtle Beach Golf Extravaganza

Annual Myrtle Beach Golf Extravaganza

  •

Well FJ friends, I'm only a week out from my annual MB Golf Extravaganza. I just got the itinerrary with course selections by the competition committee and the word that I have yet again been "invited." April 26 I fly off to begin the fun and games.....

Over 20 years ago a group of guys started going to Myrtle Beach to play golf. In those days some really didn't even play golf, but they went to spend time with friends and drink a few beers and let their hair down. I had the good fortune to get my first invitation in 1998, 13 years ago. The trip quickly became the highlight of our year, and once each January rolled around we could hardly wait with anticipation. The countdown began!

There have been highs and lows for everyone over the years. We've now lost two of our dear friends that attended annually, and a couple more guys physically can't make it any longer. Each year we now hold the Mounts-Davis Memorial Invitational Tournament, which includes presentation of the coveted "Victors Medallion" on Friday evening at dinner. And of course the required trash talking and banter that goes along makes this event get better each and every year. I know each and every one of you has a similar thing with your friends, so I'm sure you can relate!

So this year our leader has selected the following courses to play:

    Crown Point

    Heather Glen

    Leopards Chase

    Tigers Eye

    Possum Trot

    Only 8 days to go!

Have a great time Randy, after a tough year you deserve to enjoy some great weather and great friends. look forward to the post trip recap on the courses played.

Sounds CUHL. (for those stuck in the past, this is how we spell cool now)

  •

Sounds like a lot of fun Randy. I hope you have a wonderful time! Wish I was going with you. Send pics & reports of the courses you are playing.

Have a fantastic time, Randy.  And may your golf be terrific, as well.  I'm off as well next week for my annual outing--only to Hot Springs Village, AR.  Just one foursome, but we have a ball and play some wild golf.  Everyone needs at least one of these outings a year.

Awesome, Randy, glad you get to go -- you need it after your stressful year!

Thanks everyone for the nice comments. I'm just thankful I can go and see my friends and play some golf, you know?

Just came back from my trip to MB last week.  Tiger's eye is in excellent shape and so is Leopards Chase.  Very challenging layouts.  Make sure your group plays from the appropriate tee for your ability level. These courses can really give you a butt kicking if you play from the wrong tee....

Lots of bunkers; hope you really enjoy it!!!

OK, it's raining in Michigan today, so my practice session and round are a wash out....

So I just got the gear all pulled together and packed up.....

4 pairs FJ Icons, Check. (all neatly packed in my FJ duffle- Thanks Hokie)

4 Titleist hats (red, black, white, cobalt), Check.

    Dozen Titleist Pro-V1, Check.

    Clubs, (duh) Check.

    FJ 1/2 zip outerwear, Check.

    FJ SS rain gear, Check.

Looks like it's all go! See you all next week.... TTFN

Finally getting time to do the reviews of the courses:

Crown Park- Sporty yet average course that's a bit of a drive. The conditions were good versus previous years, so all the rain is treating courses well around MB. This is a good course to start your time at the beach, as it's not too tough.

Heather Glen- Always one of my favorites. This is a tough course with 3 nine hole tracks. There are lots of bunkers, elevation changes, and tough, but true greens. My personal favorites are the Red and Blue courses. There were 40 plus MPH wionds this day, and it made conditions very tough. Surprisingly, I scored mananged to get around with only 25 putts.... good scrambling for me!

Leopards Chase- Newest of the "Big Cats" courses, and a real test. Since it is the newest, it has no good clubhouse : ( , which stinks. But the course is a great test of your skills and will really test you. You get a yardage book, so you know where to avoid. Nice place and I recommend it.

Tigers Eye- Very strong track. As Lax mentioned, you must play the right tees on these courses. There is a great deal of sand, pompas grass and the usual low country stuff, which will mess up your day if you can't keep in the fairway. I love the Cats and always recommend them.

Possum Trot- This is part of the "Legends Group" that includes Heritage, Glen Dornach, and Shaftsbury. In previous years it was the "ugly sister" and really was not up to par. But they have really done some good stuff here and it played very nicely. Greens in great shape and the fairways were nicely groomed. It's a bit like Crown Park in that it's not the toughest course (sneaky tough), so it's a good course to start your trip with. But it will give you all you can handle if your game is off. I shot my highest round of the week here because I couldn't get the green spped figured out. Slow compared to others.

    Sadly, I came home....
