Some of you out there in the FJC may have had the opportunity to play at the Yeamans Hall Club in Charleston, SC and had the honor of meeting a gentle Irishman simply known at "the old pro". If you met Mike Powers you would remember him, definitely Irish and extremely friendly. "The Old Pro" at Yeamans Hall Club has passed at the age of 90 and has returned to his home to be buried in the family plot near the first hole at the legendary Old Course at Ballybunion in County Kerry, Ireland, where he began his golfing career as a caddy. Mike started with the club as an assistant in 1953 during the winter months and became the club's first year round head pro in 1976. He was nicknamed the old pro by his friends and colleagues. Mike's leg was amputated below the knee in the late fifties, but that did not stop him from game he loved so well. Two years after the operation he shot a record 64 at Yeamans Hall. He eventually retired in the early 90's but stayed an active part with the members of the club. When locals planned trip to Ireland and Sclotland, Mike was the man, to call for recommendations......Yeamans Hall Club is a private club that opened in 1925 and a Seth Raynor design.
