ICON Break-In

  •

Played 36 yesterday in a pair of ICONs. Put them on a 7 AM and they came off at about 5 PM. My feet have never felt so good after wearing a pair of shoes for so long.

Welch, I did not try on the sport pattern, but the asymetrical is what I am wearing. I need the Wide in this style, and it looks like if I go to a more classic design it may even be an Extra Wide. As I said I have a pretty high instep and I seem to need a little more volume inside the shoe. I also tried on the SYNR-G shoe and it is cut a bit differently and a Medium fits perfectly.

I have the sport pattern and a pair of asymmetricals that don't feel any different for me.  Also, as far as I know I don't have to jump sizes diepending on the style.  I haven't tried any of the shield tips but the traditional, asymmetrical and sport all fit the same for me.  I don't own the traditional style but the other two fit the same on my foot.

    EMK --

Just gonna hop in here real quick to clarify.  When 19 was in last week, we had a chance to try on a series of different pattern/size (and even category ... SYNRG) combinations.

Here's a quick recap what we found.  Rick has a very high instep, which means there is a lot of volume on the top of the foot.  This should not be confused with a high arch, which is something entirely different.  Normally, the bone on the top of the foot tends to be more pronounced for someone with a high instep, which can make an individual very sensitive to pattern and lace configurations.  I know where 19 is coming from because I have a high instep myself.

During the development of FJ ICON, we made the decision for optics reasons, to slightly vary the toe shape of the traditional FJ ICON shoes (52005, 52013, 52047, 52054) vs the rest of the styles in the category.  We used the Laser Last for the traditionals, a last that we have had in the line for quite some time now.  The other styles got the new FJ ICON Laser Last.  The shape is almost identical, except that the toe character on the contemporary styles is slightly squared off.

Here are the definitions on the FootJoy.com ...

    Laser Last (52005, 52013, 52047, 52054)
Full rounded toe character, standard fit across forefoot and instep, with a slightly narrow heel.

    FJ ICON Laser Last
Contemporary, slightly square toe character, standard fit across forefoot and instep, with a slightly narrow heel.

19 was previously a 8.5E and fit perfectly into a 8.5W in the FJ ICON Laser Lasted shoes.  The Laser Lasted traditional styles just didn't work on his high instep.  This is not common, but it happens.  We slipped him into the sport saddle just to confirm that the FJ ICON Laser Last was for him ... and it was.  He's a perfect 8.5W in the FJ ICON Laser Last.  Good news was that he played in the shoes all day and had great luck with the comfort and fit.

We also brought in a pair of SYNR-G shoes to test and he slid perfectly into an 8.5M.  This may seem odd, but is actually an expected result.  19 is an E width, which is really between a Medium and a Wide.  The lace scheme on 53918 is called a "U-throat", a roomy athletically inspired lace cut.  This is different from the lacing system that is standard on all FJ ICON shoes, referred to as a "Bal" lacing scheme (where the laces are wide at the top of the shoe and comes down to a "V" at the bottom of the instep).  When you factor the roomier lace scheme and the memory foam in the collar and the tongue, a 8.5M was the best fit for 19 in SYNR-G.

This may sound complex, but in the end, it all comes down to finding the right fit no matter what.  We take every step to ensure the fit across all FJ shoes is consistent, but there are slight variations for looks, pattern and style that can make a difference on some (not all, not most) people.

    Hope this helps.

I see... so is there a chance that since the asymmetrical, sport and traditional all fit me correctly off the shelf that others may not?  If I order a pair of, lets say, shield tips, should I try on a pair of shield tips first or can I go off of the fitting I have in my other two pairs and snatch a pair from the internet?

From my understanding, Rick just has a thicker foot than someone without a high instep?  As long as the instep the portion of the foot that ranges from the top of the toes to the beginning of the ankle?  If that isn't the instep, then I think I am lost on this one.

The laser last system is a custom option then?  Is the U-throat a lacing scheme where it is wider towards the toe region or moreso an upside down "V" pattern; virtually opposite to the Bal-lacing system?

I hope I didn't sound like I was doubting Rick had a different foot than I did or coming off wrong to anyone?  I was just letting the OP know I didn't experience any differences from out-of-the-box state to their current state.  I haven't experienced any stretch outside the expected but I can see how Rick would need a little more specialized shoe than I would due to his type of foot.

Would I have a low instep if the 12 M fits me correctly?  I am not sure now, but I don't think it matters much in my case?

I also want to praise you guys on your ability and willingnes to help ONE customer with their fit the way you guys did.  Sounds like you guys gave him an executive treatment and that is truly impressive coming from such a large company.  Great job guys.

P.S. I bet Rick loves all the attention his feet are getting, they are a minor celebrity on here! =)

Mike, thanks for adding all of the details on the fitting we did. I am glad you added all of the "shoe geek" stuff that I could not have done correctly.

Eric, they were great with the fitting. It was a perfect experience to be able to try the different styles of shoes in a variety of sizes to get a "perfect" fit.

I will say that I am very lucky to have been able to get this done. Those of you that can't, should be able to get a similar experience from your local PGA Professional that is a FootJoy retailer.

FJ ICON shoes fit almost identically throughout the majority of the shoe.  The only difference is a slight variation in the toe characters for visual appeal on certain styles.  As I said, to most, the differences will not be noticed.

There are a bunch of questions/comments from the second paragraph on.  I think I may have over "shoe termed" my response above.  PM me if you want to catch up off line.  Will be much easier to explain on the phone if you have additional questions.

Thanks to Rick, Mike and Eric for all the replies!  I think in the end, it's just important to give each style a shot.  I finally had some ICON show up at retail around me, and I found that the traditional saddle, and the asymetrical fit me better than the sport pattern, again because of the toe character (I think anyway).  I'm just going to make a point of finding the right fit for each style...

I think the clarification in the first sentence of your post cleared up the important part.  You really did geek out, but it's also interesting how much information there is to be known about a pair of shoes alone.  I'm sure that was only the tip of the iceberg but it was very interesting.

I will be in touch if I come across any additional questions, I appreciate your help!
