Shoule Phil Play the President's Cup?

Shoule Phil Play the President's Cup?

  •

Just read that Phil is considering if he will play in the President's Cup in San Francisco. He even said that Amy might come along. I'm really pondering this, because I'm not sure if it's the best thing for them right now. Phil has been playing the Fed Ex events, and really hasn't been doing too well. He admits Amy has some good and some bad days. It would be horrible if she had a bad day while out on the course... how bad would that be for Phil and the team?

Don't get me wrong. I really want them to participate, but I think it just might be time for Phil to say he's shutting it down for 2009. What thoughts do you all have?

I think if Phil thinks he can play in the tournament and perform well then I'm all for it.  No one can say how Phil will play or how he will feel.  I think it might be good for him because usually the President Cup teams have some real fun and maybe the high level of competition will help Phil get his mind off the troubles he is having elsewhere.

I think it would be good for him to play if he so decides but if not, I support that also.

I think that Phil should play.  He has earned the right to play there and while he has not lit up the playoffs he hasn't played horrible either.  If he does decide to sit it out, alothough unlikely IMO, i'm sure it will be for good reason.

I think Phil should play. Amy being there might be just what he needs, to play a little better then he has been lately. Her being there might be an inspiration for him and the team. I'm sure if she is not feeling well, she will not go to the course. I am sure they will make the best decision for them.

If Phil thinks he can play, why not? If he, in fact, does bring his wife, it just might be a chance for them both to get away from the pressures they have both been under lately, especially for Amy. I would think that they both need the time away, both from a physical and mental perspective.

I think that if he feels he can play he should as he qualified.  Personally I don't think he's playing well enough to be an asset, but maybe with Amy at his side he would know he could be there if she has a bad day versus the feeling I'm sure he has of helplessness when he's away from her (which could be why he's playing so badly right now).

If he believes he can, then should should try to. But it's still up to the captain to decide. I guess as long as he's not paired with tiger, he should do fine.

phil needs to get his head back in the game and if amy being there helps, and she feels strong enough to be there, then by all means phil should play he's earned the right.

Now that the President's Cup is over, I think Phil answered this question with an exclamation point. Not only was his match record very impressive (4-0-1) but he was also a great mentor for the younger players. He really helped Sean O'Hair and AK quite a bit.

I personally think that he had the best event of all of the players on the team. Before you remind me that Tiger was 5-0-0, remember that if it were not for the almost perfect putter of Steve Stricker, Tiger may well have been 3-2-0!

    Way to go Phil......

phil got it done this week, as did the rest of the US team.  here's hoping that he can keep it up and good things start happening for hi on and off the course.

    19...

Spot on that Phil had a huge President's Cup. I am so thrilled that he played well and was clearly on top of his game. I also agree that he was the "MVP" of the squad by helping others (Kim, O'Hair) who were struggling a bit and stepping in as a mentor. I am so happy for him to shine like this and get the accolades for being the class act he is.

In addition, a couple pieces from Golf.com and Golf Channel have covered the fact that Amy surprised Phil on Saturday night by hiding in his hotel bathroom. As one quote said, "She scared the cr@# out of me." Amy then escorted Phil to the dinner Saturday evening in the team room and a mini reunion with the wives and players on Team USA took place. I can't imagine what a motivational thrill that was for everyone, especially Phil and Amy.

Here's to hoping for a great 2010 for the Mickelson's!

I know there was some doubt as to whether he should have played based on his family situation, how he was playing prior to the final 4 events of the Playoffs but after his performance, I'm glad he did play...he was definitely an asset to the team and to the younger players he partnered with.

    Great Job Phil!!!

It was a great story and cool surprise for them.  I actually am glad that nothing silly happened.  I think if I thought I was alone in my hotel room and the bathroom door opened that I might just start swinging!

Phil definitely put any questons we may have had to rest.  A very solid performance with the wedges and putter.  Haven't seen Phil putt that well in quite some time.  Best of luck in 2010 to all the participants.
