'09; Good Year or a Bust?

'09; Good Year or a Bust?

    Yang in The PGA

    Cink in The Open Championship

    Cabrera in The Masters

    Glover in The US Open

Seems this year was a breakout year for players we didn't think (not intuitively) would be this years Major winners. Now 2009 has passed and we are seeing some things that maybe were not in the conciousness. Things like Els and Goosen being lesser factors with each passing year. Davis, Kenny, and Freddie are pretty much looking towards the Champions Tour. Anthony Kim, where are you? Some are shocked that Tiger didn't win Sunday, and others are not shocked that Phil really had a poor outing, regardless of sentimental feelings.

So looking back at this point in time, prior to the FedEx hyperbole and the President's Cup exhibition, whta are your thoughts about 2009? Happy? Surprised? Good for the game? Don't care?

I for one loved seeing Tiger go down on Sunday. Yang hit the shots under pressure and in the clutch. He was Tigere, and Tiger was mortal. I hated seeing Tom Watson's putter leave him on the next to the last shot, just as Kenny Perry gagged on his chip in S.D. And Glover? Nice guy, but he's pretty vanilla, and will be invisible like several other one hit wonders.

    You?

I think that all the other players in the world are trying to improve their game or else go broke. Tiger is still the best, I think they are getting closer to his level.

I would say that it was okay.  My golf season hasn't been that great this year, so maybe that has something to do with how I view the PGA this season.  Haven't played as much as I would have liked, so far, and my scores have suffered.   I've probably carried that frustration into how I view the PGA season this year.

Really, while I do like all the major winners, none of them stirred any excitement up for me.  They are all great, deserving players, but just didn't do it for me.

I think this years major winners are pretty suprising.  The lowest ranked players to win in quite some time.  It shows how deep the fields are.

I would have to say it was a good year.  I liked the new faces and all the players were very deserving and gracious winners.  I can't say I would have preferred it any other way other than seeing one of the young guns get a major.  That's for next year but I would say it was a good year.  A lot of drama, some great shots, and some new winners.  It's all something that makes for a great year.

I guess the reason I like it is the same reason people didn't like it.

Im happy for Glover and Cink.  Its awesome that Carbera won another major.  I was so sad that Tiger lost on Sunday.

I think it has been a good year so far. It is nice to see a number of first time winners. I like that each tournamnet is not a forgone conclusion that Tiger will win. There seems to be a bit more parity in the game and I think it is good for golf.

tiger has forced the others on tour to work harder and the others are beginning to answer the coll.  no the year isn't a bust because of differant players coming up a level or two to win the majors, i see it as a bright future for golf and an incentive even for tiger to bring the a game at every tournament.  i see it as a promise of some very good showdowns on the links to come

I hope this years winners enjoy their victories because we all know TW is going to come out next year with never before seen determination and domainate the tour just to show no one has controlled him yet.  He loves for people to trash talk him, it just fuels his fire.

Really great set of thoughts and insights here. Thank you all for responding. As a Phil Mickelson guy, I am looking forward to him getting his head in the game next year, once the personal issues have resolved themselves (fingers crossed). I do agree that the depth and diversity of the fields each week are really inspiring, and truly do set golf far above other professional sports. In golf, you earn what you get week in and week out. Thanks again FJ fans. Well stated and thanks for playing!

Yeah, Phil is going through a lot and I hope everything works out for him and his family.

One thing Phil needs to do is start practicing more 3 footers.  The man has pushed and pulled more 3 footers than anyone I have ever seen.  If I was playing Phil, I would make him putt those 3 footers... I have a 50/50 he will miss.

Anyone know why Phil seems to do this?  Usually he opens the face a bit and starts it dead left... not sure why, especially with the forward press and all.  He shouldnt get that face more than 2 inches back on a 3 footer, I thought there would be little room for error or to turn the face on such a short putt.

Now back to the topic at hand... I do like the diversity and I look forward to some new winners next year.  It's always exciting when someone wins with TW in the field, especially at a major.  It's crazy that he is such a dominate player that it almost most it a better win when TW in in the field.  Shouldn't a win be a win without taking anything away from it when TW isn't in the field?

It was a good year for the players that won those competitions, but I don't think it was necessarily a good thing for the tour.  The tour is hurting for money and they have sub-marquis players winning their biggest events.  If Tiger is not in the winner's circle the PGA Tour feels it.  The PGA Tour is going to have to hope that Tiger can keep it up for four straight weeks and conquer the FedEx Cup.

Any year with golf is a good year.  It just goes to show how many other players are stepping up to try to compete with Tiger.

Overall, seeing the quality of golf this year is good for golfs future...eventually (although know one wants to think about it) there will be no Tiger so the upcoming players excelling this year and last are good signs for the future.

I think it has been a Good Year.  I really hate when the media says it is a bust just because Tiger did not win.  I understand that non-golfers only watch if Tiger is winning.  I wish they would cater more to the golfer who watches no matter what.

I hope that Phil's family gets better and comes back next year with a renewed spirit.
