Tiger Woods helps Sean O'Hair take the lead?

  •

I was watching Golf Channel and it showed Tiger giving Sean a "putting lesson" so to speak.  I know he was trying to get him to open the club a little on the back stroke (adding loft) and close it a little on the forward stroke (releasing the head), a lot like what Bobby Jones did and Tiger does.

I'm wondering, do you think Sean put this tip into play or it is just one of those things the media like to make a big deal about when Sean just had a solid day of golf?

I know tour pros help each other a lot so this doesn't sound news worthy to me to mention that Tiger gave him a putting lesson...

There was a follow up article in golf.com today on this. Seems a reporter asked Tiger about this yesterday, and he said that Sean is his friend, so why not help him? Go to golf.com to see the full interview and story.

I think this is another of those differentiators that sets golf above other sports. Golfers truly try to help others, from the communities that tournaments are played in to their fellow competitors. The thinking is that the betterment of society, and improvement of those I compete with, ultimately makes me better is so true.

I have to tip my hat to Tiger...

Interesting point, I saw the segment and it seemed like he was excited about the tip and probably put it into play...

Putting is such a personal subject and what feels right one day may not the next so I would be curious if Sean makes any future comments about it...

That just shows how truly a gentlemens game golf is, when a competitor will show another competitor something to help his game...

It would seem that Tiger enjoys helping friends. By his doing so, it makes him a better person and competitor. He has also helped Stricker and several others, but did not get the media attention that he did with Sean. If you noticed, when they recently interviewed Phil about his game, Phil noted that another golfer saw  what he was doing wrong in his putting game and now Phil is putting better. Shows you what real competitors are truly about in this game of golf.

that's what you call a class act.  help the competition so that they can bring it and in this case sean did.

    agree....1st class all the way

Can't say Sean played poorly at all this week.  66-70-70-69 isn't too shabby.

    Tiger went 67-68-69-70

    Phil went 73-67-66-65

Kind of weird, Tiger increased by one each day and after day one, Phil decreased by one.  =)

My question about the whole event is did Sean ask Tiger for help or did Tiger approach Sean? Not that it really matters but Tiger doesn't seem like the kind of guy that will just walk up to someone on the putting green and say " hey, your swing is bad, try this." He would have to have some knowldge of O'Hair's putting stroke to give him that tip. If O'Hare was a straight back-straight through putter, the tip about releasing the club would not be very helpful.

He was a straight back, straight through putter, but Tiger suggested he change it.  Not sure the details but I'd imagine Sean asked TW to take a look or something.  Most professionals won't give unsolicited advice unless he saw Sean having a real tough time on the greens and offered some help.

The whole thing with Phil was another player noticing something wrong with his stroke and telling him.  Then he went and saw the master of the putter, Dave Stockton, and got everything all worked out.
