Underachieving Tour Players

Underachieving Tour Players

I think we've had a similar thread but was unable to find it so I figured why not open the floor on this topic again.

It appears that Adam Scott was playing well this weekend which got me to thinking about how much he has underachieved this year and in his career.

Who out there on any of the tours do you think have underachieved based on their hype either coming out of college, junior ranks or even from other countries??

Right now I have to say Adam Scott is tops on my list.

When I say underachieve, I mean in total wins...not so much rating them on Majors (although they are factors as well) because I know how many people like to bash Sergio, but he has a lot of wins on various tours...I'm looking for someone that is really a disappointment...

i don.t really consider jim furyk a disappointment, but if you are basing underachieving by the number of wins vs their talent , ability, ranking and expectations we all seem to expect to see out of the pros.  well i guess he belongs on the list.  but like i said, i don't see him as a disappointment.

on a side note, david duval had his moment in the sun, i hope it will shine on him again sometime soon.

I understand what you are saying, but I can't say winning 15 times between the PGA, Euro and Asian tour (since 2001 when he was a full pro) qualifies as a failure any more so than Sergio whose only won 19 times between the 3 tours (since 1999 when he turn pro).  In my opinion, if you don't rate them on majors, I can't rate them so much on one years performance plus Sergio has had two more years on tour than Adam so you would expect him to win a couple more times, nothing earth shattering though...

My biggest disappointment on the tour is Charles Howell III.

  •

CH III is a good choice for this category. I would give anything for the chance to be that disappointing though.

  •

Would have to agree with Adam Scott for TY.

Overall I think EM is dead on with Charles Howell III, he should have sdone so much more by now with his talent level.

  •

I'll throw 2 out there based on talent to wins... Ty Tryon and Michelle Wie.

When Ty went pro he had HUGE talent, but was a young kid. Somwhere on the journey he just fell off the map without really achieving anything. He is nowhere today.

As for Michelle, she has a great deal of talent, but needs to get that first win before people stop seeing her as just another kid who got zapped by her over-brearing parents. Face it, she has all the tools to win a huge amount on the LPGA and dominate the way Annika did. If she puts it together, Lorena will be her Phil. But right now the promise hasn't lived up to it.

What happened to David Duval? He was doing fine at the US Open and a few other tournaments this year. I thought he was going to make a comeback, then he fell off the radar.

  •

Nice one Tar Heel, completely forgot about Ty Tryon...he was hot what about 10 years ago now...boy did you pull that one out of left field on me.

David Duvall, Charles Howell III, Sergio Garcia, and as far as I am concerned Hunter Mayhan. All four have never really lived up to the hype. Duvall can't seem to get his game back and folds under pressure; Howell never really offers any challenge to anyone and still has only flashes of greatness; Sergio, well we don't have to go there, but he still hasn't proved himself on a continuing basi;. And lastly, Hunter seems only to come thru once in great while. He seems to be a big pressure player and when under pressure performs brilliantly, yet he doesn't come thru on a consistent basis.

  •

Notah Begay is another one of the potential greats to underachieve.

I think once Hunter Mayhan gets a few more years under in , he will be fine.

not going there with sergio, you're right as far as not proving himself on any continuous basis.  it seemed that in the beginning the golf gods gave us a challenger to tiger, and while sergio was having fun, he did pose a challenge.  but then it seems to me, he started believing the hype the media spreads whenever they can, tried to get perfect, changed his game completely (evidence in the constant regripping on each shot) , and lost his game.  i like seeing him have a good week and when you see him in match play, a little bit of the old sergio (the having fun sergio) sneaks out.

Garcia and Scoot top my list Scott has not played up to his standerds and Garcia cant "close the deal" They are both underachiveing

  •

Hey OUTIGER...where did you come up with that one..Notah Begay...does he still even play?  Last I heard he was trying to play in Europe but I have no idea whatever happened to him since.

I think CH III should have won more based on the hype he had coming out.  Ty Tryon since no one knows where he is.  I also thank that DD could be there, but maybe it was due to injuries.
