Cold Weather golf balls

  •

I have pretty much always played the ProV1 regardless of time of year or weather.  Do any of you switch to a different ball come colder weater?  What ball, and how does it perform for you?

I stay with the Pro V1x, I have found no benefit in changing when it gets colder. The ball just won't go as far and I just use more club.

that is what I do as well.  Thanks for the response.  How did your testing go the other day?

I play ProV1, year round here in California even though I switch at times to ProV1x.  We are in the high desert and we also play in low 40s and 30s at times.

What has helped the ball react closer to warm weather during winter are:

    1.  I keep them indoors and not in the car or garage or outside.

    2.  In the morning, I soak them in hot water.

    3.  I keep them in a warm bag, hand warmers (not sure if that is legal in formal or tournament play)

    4.  I try and play the balls in rotation of every three holes.

For me, even though the difference is minimal, I enjoy doing it and it adds to the thought that I've done what I can. . . just something I do.  For others who can crank the mph, it makes a good difference.

WHEN IT GETS DOWN IN THE 50S AND BELOW I CHANGE MY PROV1X TO A PROV1 AND I HAVE NO IDEA WHY,,,EXCEPT IT FEELS BETTER,,,,GUESS I'M NUTS.

THE WAY I PLAY I COULD USE A FEATHERY AND GET THE SAME RESULTS,,,,,,,LOL.

I do not change balls due to temperature. I typically play ProV1. When it's cold it just feels a bit firmer and doesn't go as far (at least that's how it seems). No matter what ball is played, I imagine the physics would be the same. Between holes, or while waiting to putt, I keep the ball in my pocket, in hand, to help keep it warmer before the next shot.

Noel, thanks for all of those tips, but I can't see myself going through all of the motions you do, although I applaud your efforts.  I do keep the balls in my locker, and try not to rotate the ball unless it is not a good one...meaning its got a couple of bogies in a row stuck in it...lol.

But only if you are using your spoon, mashie, and mashie-niblick, Doug.

Hey Dog, Remember when balls had compressions stamped on them. You could drop from a 100 to a 90 for the winter or even an 80, but that was considered a ladies ball.

yep.....until people started to realize they could hit lower compression balls farther.  than all the rage was everyone buying ladies balls.  shortly after that companies did away with the compression.

(lol, understood.)  yeah, keeping the Pro Vs indoors are good enough and pretty much the most important rather than leaving it out in a garage or trunk of a car overnight when it's cold.

Late January is the beginning of Team Play season here in SoCal.  Some or a few guys changes ball brand into something else when the temps drop to 40s and below just to get the same reaction from what they are used to in a ball. . . (surprise! urg, says the pirate.)

But I like the idea that I'm always using the same Pro V1 year round. . . as you do.
