In the latest "Meet the Ambassadors" feature, we are happy to introduce you to Bobby Swain, or "Go Hokies" as many of you know him. Bobby is most likely the community member with the largest shoe collection...and one that may even exceed that of the FJ Staff! What you may not know, however, is he is a phenomenal player as well with a career best round of 62 to his credit. With his vast collection of colorful FootJoy golf shoes and his tendency to go low out on the course, Bobby believes you have to look good to play good! 1. At what age did you start playing golf? Who introduced you to the game?Started around 6 years old (about 50 years ago). My dad started playing and he must have had an agreement with my mother that he "had" to take me with him when he went to the golf course (what a way to baby sit). Started with a set of Wilson Patty Bergs and the Acushnet "Club Special". 2. What's your best score and where was it? This one is pretty easy. I shot a 62 at Round Meadow Country Club in Christiansburg, VA back in June, 1975. I consider my best round to be a 68 I shot last June (2009) on the Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech. The course plays around 7100 yards in length from the Maroon Tees. Also of note, the most holes I've ever played in one day was 113 for a Junior Golf fundraiser! 3. Favorite golf moment? When you have been playing for 50 years there are quite a few…first Hole-In-One playing with my father when I was 16, meeting Sam Snead at The Homestead, finding Greg Norman's lost ball at Myrtle Beach, meeting & putting on the same practice green with Gary Player (June 2009), visiting Augusta National for a practice round and playing Pine Valley.4. What's your "specialty" on the golf course (driving, approach, short game, putting, etc)?Looking good in new FJ ICONs! I also have a pretty decent short game.5. What are you working on?I'm always working on the short game (at least 50% of my practice time).6. What golf-related product can you not live without?Definitely my SkyCaddie, although my ball retriever is also pretty valuable. I estimate I recover about 4000 golf balls per year.7. Tell us about your most memorable round of golf (why this round, with whom, where, when, score, etc).My most memorable round of golf is always the last one I played - Thursday mid-morning May 8th with Pat O'Bannon - 4 birdies, Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech. I always find something good with every shot. Best shot this round was a nice seven iron against a pretty strong wind on Par 3 14th, (playing to hole - 157), 2.5 feet. Next round Sunday - May 10th.8. What are your interests outside of golf?Virginia Tech Athletics, of course! I also enjoy bowling during the winter months, attending Major league Baseball Games (always one or two a year with wife), tailgating with friends before VT Home Football Games (about the only time I'll give up golf on a Saturday), photography and collecting FootJoys & Argyle Sweaters.9. How did you learn about the FJ Community?I happened upon the web site when I was looking at the MyJoys web page.10. How many pairs of golf shoes do you currently have in the closet? Final round of the club championship, which pair are you wearing?I think I'm up to 45 or 46 (need to count - have added 4 pair so far this year). Final round of club championship - probably haven't ordered that pair yet - I'm pretty sure I'll have a couple pair of the "New Wave Shoe" that Poulter unveiled during the Masters.
Congrats on the feature.
Very nice profile. I'm jealous you've played/putted with some of the games best.
Nice to know more about you Go Hokies. See I have a long way to go with my shoe collection! I love it that your most memorable round is "the last you played". Enjoy all of your posts.
Hokies, greater insight, glad to get to know more about you. Sad to say, you have more pairs of shoes than I have had rounds of golf in the last 3 years.
Great interview, thanks Chris. I'm looking foward to see more over the summer.
Didn't know Bobby Swain was such a GOOD golfer, but he ALWAYS looks sharp!! And his shoes take it to another level!
very cool to hear who all you have met...golf is a great game for people to connect!!
Hi Bobby. Nice article. I knew you were a shoe-holic, but 45/46 pairs of golf shoes??? Crazy! See you soon... Ellen
Very nice profile. As a shoe specialist you have 'em all beat. Nice to see what others have for interests outside of golf.
Congrats to the "Imelda Marcos" of the golf community. Nice profile. It's good to get some background of our ambassadors.
Great profile, well done FJ and Bobby.
Bobby... my new hero!
I just returned from my beach trip and now find this spectacular bio. Very nice Hokies.
Great feature, Go Hokies. Love learning more about our group -- and nice to see the saintly woman who authorized the FootJoy storage solution in the mancave.
Always good to see a fellow Hokie on here. I live in Phoenix, AZ now. I have played Round Meadow CC and the old VT course but not the new Pete Dye course. The next time I go back I plan to play it. Should be pretty easy to spot you... the man with cleanest shoes and the most coordinated golf attire. : )
