The distinct leaderboard of the season's third major championship
The hotel may not be up to much, but the golf course is superb! All of the players were out and about today, braving the strong westerly wind coming from the Irish Sea, some playing a full round, some opting to play 4-5 holes and spend the rest of the day chipping, putting and hitting balls.
The Open Championship is where we do a substantial shoe issue to the players, including many new styles that, and with 4 experienced shoe-fitters on hand in the form of members of the UK FJ Salesforce. The Fitting Cabin has been flat-out from Monday through Wednesday with players coming in to collect new shoes, some to double check their sizing, others wanting to simply put some new spikes in....
As you’ve seen we created some Open special MyJoys for some of the players, including JB Holmes who put them straight on and went out to play in them. One of the new styles of Classics that was unleashed this week is a black pebble and patent shield-tip Classics Dry Premiere, which was seen on the feet of Adam Scott, David Frost and recent winner Ross Fisher. DryJoys are another popular choice, and are being worn by Zach Johnson, Jerry Kelly, Woody Austin and Vijay Singh. DL III dropped by and picked up a pair of white/brown ReelFit which went straight on and kept Davis stable as he hit balls on the range.
Fresh from victory at Loch Lomond last week Graeme McDowell was on top form and proudly sporting a pair of Classics Exotics in Ostrich leather, complete with matching belt and money clip. And having grown up on the links of Northern Ireland it would be fair to say that Graeme was feeling very much at home, and was absolutely ripping it in practice.
The practice ground was facing straight into the stiff breeze and was giving the players a great chance to work on keeping their ball flight down. JB Holmes, wearing DryJoys PODS #53502 was crushing his Cobra driver, long, low and straight.
Given the stiff wind (gentle breeze according to the locals) there has been a lot of demand for FJ Outerwear from players and caddies alike, and has been keeping the likes of Zach Johnson, Ross Fisher and Paul Waring warm and dry.
Martin Kaymer looks in excellent form, and took some time out of his practice schedule to head over to the Golf Foundation and challenge the kids to a chipping contest. As you can see from the video, he didn’t fare too well…
One of the best features of the Open Championship is the ability for anyone to qualify. One of those who has done it the ‘hard’ way is Jon Bevan, a professional from the Southwest of England. For the past 3 years Jon has played both Regional and Final Qualifying, including making the cut at Carnoustie last year, and true to form is here again, and swinging it well. Jon, a member of Team DryJoys in the UK, shot an excellent 3 under par over 36 holes at Southport and Ainsdale to claim his place in the field, and is relishing the challenge ahead.
Having spent some time on the range watching the players, keep your eyes on Lee Westwood, Angel Cabrera and Soren Hansen.
I am wondering if the UK FJ Salesforce can tell us what size shoes the players all wear? It was VERY interesting to note that JB Holmes put on a brand new pair of shoes and went out to play in them immediately, with no 'break-in period'. Says a lot about FJs comfort level!
