An emotional Simon Thornton dedicated his maiden European Tour victory to his late father after the Irishman held his nerve to claim the Najeti Hotels et Golfs Open title in a play-off and fittingly on Father’s Day.
Thornton (FJ Sport & StaSof) holed several tricky putts on the back nine but left his best till last on the final hole, as he drained a ten-foot putt to take it to extra holes.
Under the most intense of pressure, the 36 year old rolled it into the cup and clenched his fist in celebration as he signed for a one under par 70.
He kept his cool once again in the play-off, finding the fringe of the green, The Irishman then rolled a perfectly-weighted putt from 30 feet which slid just left of the hole, ensuring his par and most importantly the win.
“It’s so big for me,” said a tearful Thornton. “On father’s day too, he passed away three years ago and it still hurts, but they are happy tears today. This is dedicated to him.”
“I didn’t play particularly well today in perfect conditions but I got up and down when I had to and holed good putts.”
“I didn’t put myself in position very well so I was scrambling but my short game held up. I've been working hard on my short game for a couple of years now so I'm delighted. I changed my putter and my putting technique last week too so it all came together this week.”
“On the last putt – I had been saying to myself all day, if I'm going to make it easy for myself you need to try on every putt and make sure it goes where you want to hit it – so I just picked a line and willed it in and it dropped.”
Thornton’s rise is an incredible story of progression to the top of European golf against all odds, as he was a seven handicap golfer just over a decade ago.
Born in Bradford, England, he moved to Ireland to become an Assistant Professional at Royal County Down Golf Club before rising through the Irish professional ranks to the Challenge Tour and then The European Tour.
“Hopefully this is a stepping stone for me,” he said. “I’ll go home this week now and celebrate, take a week off, and then play in the Irish Open.
“Last year was a huge disappointment on The European Tour after getting there through the Challenge Tour.
“To come here and play like I did is incredible. What happens now with this category is fantastic; it’s mad how things have changed. It’s surreal.”
Stacy Lewis shot a final round 72 to win the Women's British Open across the blustery Old Course at St. Andrews this weekend. Trailing the leaders deep into the final nine holes, Lewis made birdie three on the famed road hole to reach 7-under par. Her five iron approach into the green settled four feet from the hole. Lewis described this shot as, "one of the best of my career...I was trying to hit it 160 yards in the air. It worked out perfectly."
Heading to the 18th, Lewis told her caddy she would need one more birdie to assure her the win. Lewis' drive left her 40 yards short of the green. Electing to putt the ball, Lewis rolled it through the "Valley of Sin" to about 20 feet past the hole. She made the come-backer for birdie to post eight under par for the tournament. The eight under total was enough, as all competitors fell victim to the brutal winds whipping across the historic Old Course, giving Lewis a two stroke victory.
"It all happened so fast at the end. You're afraid for every shot, and all of a sudden you make a couple of birdies and it's over," said Lewis of her final nine on the Old Course. This is Lewis' second Major victory and third win of 2013.
Lewis opted for the DryJoys Sport golf shoes and a FJ StaSof glove during her Championship performance.

Adam Scott wins the Barclays at Liberty National with a blemish free 66 to win by one over Graham Delaet and three others.
Starting the final day a distant 6 strokes behind the leaders, Adam had to put up a low number for any shot at the title. On the front, Adam made three consecutive birdies to reach nine under par. He closed out the front with a few pars and posted a 33. Liberty National continued to firm up and Adam continued his normal ball striking clinic. Scott added a couple more pars before birdies at 14 and 16 to reach 11-under par. Two more pars gave Scott the lead in the clubhouse.
With many players still on the course the ending was very much in doubt. Scott said in his post round interview, "I am really happy with my game," continuing in his usually casual manner, "It was a positive to get back into the mix at the other majors, and I am pushing hard to get another win -- if not this week, then I will try harder next week."
Scott retired to the driving range to stay loose and catch the action on a large Jumbotron-like screen across the way. He watched on as all players wilted, none of them mustering up the birdies to catch up on the treacherous Liberty National track. As the final competitor missed his birdie bid at the last, Adam embraced his caddy as the 2013 Barclays Champion.
Adam Scott opted for the lightweight comfort and stability of the FJ Sport golf shoe, "The power is coming from the ground and my connection to the ground is through my shoe, so it's important that I am in control throughout my golf swing, and I believe the FJ Sport is the shoe that can do that for me."
Scott also uses the FJ StaSof golf glove,"It's so important you have a good feel through your glove, it is your only connection to the club."
This is Adam's second win of the of the 2013 season; it also moves him to 2nd in the race for the FedEx Cup.

Jimmy Walker took home the Frys.com Open with a final round 66 that left him two clear of the field.
Entering the day in a tie for fourth, thanks to a third round 9-under par 62, Walker needed a solid Sunday performance to have any shot at the title. Walker came out of the gate making two birdies on the first four holes before turning in three under par 32. On the back nine Walker added two more birdies to race to the top and take home the title.
The 54-hole leader, 23 year old Challenge Tour player Brooks Koepka had a fresh outlook on not protecting his the lead, "I just didn't make the shots I needed to win. Congrats to Jimmy on that. He played very well. But just try to learn from the whole experience. Any time you can put yourself in that kind of pressure, it's always good. It you take something from it, that's even better."
The win comes In his eighth season and his 188th tournament. It also earns Walker a spot in the 2014 Masters Tournament, "I felt like I was good enough to be in them, play in them," Walker said. "There's always this big pressure to get into Augusta, and I would press here, press there. You want to be playing in the big stuff. That's what I'm aspiring to do -- play against the world's best."
Arriving to a hero's welcome in his native country, Adam Scott received the key to the city of the Gold Coast following the Wednesday Pro-Am. It was Adam's first trip back to Australia since his Master's Triumph back in April.
Following the round Scott stated, "I wanted to come home straight away after winning, but thought if I come home and start celebrating I might not make it back"
Once tournament play began, Scott would not disappoint his hometown crowd as he ran away with the Australian PGA Championship by four strokes.
Late in the final round, Scott carried a one shot lead into the par 5 twelfth hole before play was halted due to local thunderstorms. Upon returning to play, Scott launched a 266 yard four iron right at the stick, nearly holing it for albatross. The tap in eagle slammed the door on his competitors, and Scott cruised to the four shot win.
"I came out and knew I had to do something great to win this," Scott said. "It's been an incredible year since April, and so great to come home. I've had a great week."
The win also gives Adam Scott the last of the three Australian Majors.
Scott wore a prototype FJ golf shoe and StaSof glove en route to his winning performance.

On the European Tour, Fedex Cup Champion and arguably the hottest player on the planet right now, Henrik Stenson blew away the field in the World Tour Championship in Dubai. Shooting a final-round 8-under 64, that included a tap in eagle at the final hole, giving the big Swede a six stroke victory.
Stenson has now become the first player to win the Race to Dubai and the Fedex Cup in the same season.
"I have managed to do something very, very special here this week by winning both in America and the Race to Dubai," adding, "It has been an incredible Summer for me, the Autumn in America was great, and now this...It has been a dream season," said Stenson following his win.
Stenson opted for FJ ICON and Pure Touch Limited throughout his successful season on both the PGA and European Tours.
On the Australasian Tour, Masters Champion and world number two, Adam Scott continued his winning ways by winning for the second consecutive week at the Australian Masters. Last year Scott won this tournament and claimed it gave him the confidence he needed to win the green jacket a few months later.
This year on a difficult wind-swept Royal Melbourne golf course Adam Scott shot rounds of 67-66-66-71, to place him at 14-under par two clear of his closest pursuant.
“I think it’s very hard to win two tournaments full stop, let alone back to back, so I’m quite pleased with myself this week," Adam stated post round. “Sometimes you win a little bit ugly. All the good stuff I had done in the first three rounds counted for a lot, even though it wasn’t the prettiest golf today."
Adam Scott has been testing a new prototype FJ shoe and his trusted StaSof glove during his two wins in Australia.
Ten time PGA Tour winner and Masters Champion Zach Johnson is no stranger to closing the deal down the stretch of big events against the world's best players, and this weekend he did not disappoint. Four strokes down with eight holes to play, Zach Johnson birdied four of seven holes to tie for the lead heading to the eighteenth.
Then, from the middle of the fairway on the final hole of regulation, Johnson inexplicably hits his eight iron approach into the green front hazard. Recomposing himself and taking his drop at 58 yards, Johnson, who is widely regarded as one of the best with a wedge in his hands, holes out the shot to save par and force a playoff!
On the first hole of the playoff, Johnson played the 18th with much less drama, hitting the fairway, and green and two putting for a par. His playing competitor would fail to get up and down from a greenside bunker giving Zach the victory.
Zach Johnson opted for the always reliable DryJoys Tour golf shoe and StaSof golf glove during his winning performance.
Steady veteran Zach Johnson opened his 2014 campaign with a victory at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions at Kapalua.
Starting the week with rounds of 66 and 67 placed Johnson atop the leaderboard at the halfway point of the tournament. He struggled to a 74 during the third round, falling out of the lead with only the final round to play.
With strokes to make up, Johnson birdied three holes on his outward nine. Adding four more birdies on the inward nine gave Johnson a one stroke lead. No one could match his 19 under par total, giving Johnson the win!
Johnson relied on DryJoys Tour and StaSof during his winning performance.
The is Johnson's 11th career PGA Tour Victory.

PGA Tour Rookie, Chesson Hadley won the Puerto Rico Open in only his 13th PGA Tour start. The Georgia Tech standout captured the lead thanks for a third round 66. Stating post round, "You got to stay aggressive out here. I've learned that. For me, if I kind of take the foot off the pedal a little bit, I'll kind of lose focus and I won't be as sharp as I would like to be, so I plan on being really aggressive."
Hadley's plan for Sunday's final round was a good one, making birdies on three of his first five holes to maintain control of the tournament. Making the turn in 33, Hadley played mistake free golf the rest of the way. Adding birdies at 17 and 18 to post a four day total of 21 under par, two clear of his closest competitors.
Hadley looked to his Web.com experience the previous year to pull through on Sunday, "The two wins last year, that helps a lot because you're there, you've learned how to win, you learn how not to choke, and there's a lot going on."
The win gives Hadley a two-year tour exemption on the PGA Tour and spots in The Players Championship, PGA Championship and 2015 Tournament of Champions.

Steven Bowditch battled through blustery conditions on a difficult TPC San Antonio golf course to win the Valero Texas Open. The 30 year old Australian began Sunday's final round with a three stroke lead thanks to three rounds in the sixties that placed him at 12 under par. Bowditch dropped a few shots early, but remained atop the leaderboard as his chasers also fell victim to the difficult, windy conditions. On the back nine, a birdie on the par 5 - 14th hole helped pad his lead. Stacy Lewis won the North Texas LPGA Shootout Presented by JTBC with a four round total of 16 under par, 6 clear of her nearest competitor.
Starting the day in a tie for the lead, Lewis shot a blazing 64 to runaway from the field.
Lewis stated of her stellar performance post round, "I kind of have these mini goals in the back of my mind, like a bogey free tournament or a certain number of putts, just kind of things that aren’t necessarily score related. So one of them was kind of taking a tournament and running away with it, and that’s what I’ve wanted to do it now for a year. So to be so close the last few weeks and then to come out and shoot 64, I mean I don’t even know what to say. It’s what I’ve always wanted to do, and just to do it here at home, in front of all these fans was pretty cool.”
